Beli

The picturesque village of Beli is located on the northern tip of the Cres Island. Indeed, it is one of the most beautiful places around. The town maintains its medieval legacy and offers visitor a true glimpse into the past. The village center is perched high above a 130m cliff face slanting down to a natural harbor and a beach. The outcropping of city’s outer wall still reminds of its strategic importance, as a fortress, in ancient times.

The history of the village dates back to 4000 years. The name is derived from Bela IV, who once found refuge from the approaching tartar tribesman. Today, it is one of the most popular destinations for tourists. The town has less than hundred permanent residents. The economy mainly depends on tourism. Hundreds of visitors flock this ancient seaside fortress every summer. Temporary shops and stalls are than set up on the pebble beach and around the town. The town itself is a living museum with narrow alleyways, balconies and red roofs.

Romans have left their marks on the town. Its medieval structures are stuff of a legend. The entrance to the old city is from a Roman bridge over the canyon. From the ruins of an amphitheater to the prehistoric stables and numerous well carved tombstones and stone heads, the town dazzles visitors on every step. The church of St. Maria and St. Anthony are the finest examples of Roman and Gothic architectures. The peaceful village is surrounded by the well preserved Tramontane forest which is ideal for hiking and walking trials. Infact, an Eco center in the village provides visitors a rare glimpse into the history books while preserving the town’s cultural legacy.
