Sveti Juraj
Sveti-Juraj is a village that sits on the coast of Velebit. This settlement is in a place where it is easiest to pass to Velebit. At one time a stone dam connected this village to the mainland, but in time the dam sank into the sea taking part of this ancient settlement with it. The beautiful harbors protect small vessels from South and West winds, although they are not always protected from the winds form the Oltari Pass. The economy here is based on fishing, farming, livestock, wood processing and tourism.
Above the village of Sveti-Juraj there are remains of the prehistoric culture. This village was deserted in the 16th century because of Turkish invasions. Reconstruction didn’t begin again until the 18th century, when it became a merchant port and religous center. Tourists visit the village to see the rich history of the religous culture, along with the beautiful scenery. The white sandy beaches, the gracious water falls and amazing architecture are all the more reason to visit Sveti-Juraj. If you would like to stay in the village there are plenty of private accomodations available.
